Comfort Food

Good Morning all,

How is everyone this lovely morning? August is gone and September is here, fall is fast on its way. It will be time to start making comfort food for those cool autumn nights.

What is comfort food?
Well, comfort food means different things to different people. My definition is warm, cozy, and food reminds me of home. According to Wikipedia, “It is food prepared traditionally, that may have a nostalgic or sentimental appeal to an individual or a specific culture”. Comfort food also causes the brain to associate good experiences with specific flavors, fragrances and textures, coding them as harbingers of happiness and the brain reaches its relaxed, restorative comfort state when we feel safe and/or when we receive rewards and/or when we feel part of something bigger than ourselves – a culture or a community: http://www.gilttaste.com/stories/622-explaining-the-psychology-of-comfort-food

Many foods are considered comfort foods. For example: Chicken Noodle Soup, Meatloaf, Vegetable Beef Soup, Macaroni and Cheese, Chili, Fried Chicken, Potatoes (any kind: mashed, baked, salad, or fried), and of course who could forget Chocolate Chip Cookies (fresh out of the oven when they are still hot & gooey). These listed above are more American; other parts of the world also have their own list. A few that I have found in my research are: Spatzle from Germany, Pad Thai from Thailand, Makaronia from Greece, and Dal & Rice from India. http://www.care2.com/greenliving/7-comfort-foods-from-around-the-world.html?page=8

Oh boy, my mouth is watering and it is lunch time, so I am out of here. Until next time, make something cozy to eat and stay happy…
